The OMM 2008

The OMM
The Original Mountain Marathon (OMM) 2008 is fast approaching and I can imagine there are a fair few people across the land thinking “oh my god why on earth have I entered that!” I know I am one of those people as I have chosen to have a pop at the Elite category this year.

The OMM for the uninitiated is a two day running event called a mountain marathon, which is a mix between orienteering and fell running. The OMM is the first ever of these types of events and since they established in 1967 there has been many other events pop up around the globe.

Elite is literally a marathon over the worst terrain the UK has to offer whilst carrying a rucksack of camping gear, an overnight camp in some windswept valley, followed by another marathon. This I do for fun?

The venue for 2008 has been announced as Borrowdale. A place that is recognised as the wettest part of England so the chances of a dry weekend are slim. The fact that the OMM is coming to town makes the chances even less.

But am I looking forward to it? Hell yes! We are going to be going southwards from Borrowdale so looking towards the Scafell Range, Bowfell, Esk Pike etc. But as we are in the elite we will probably be going a LOT further than most, add a few nav mistakes and we could be out for a long long time!
